The visiting team pose with ACE-Aquafish team at LUANAR Bunda campus
A team from Africa Center of Excellence in Water Management (ACE – WM) based at Addis Ababa University (AAU) in Ethiopia on Thursday 1st March 2018 visited LUANAR’s Africa Centre of Excellence in Aquaculture and Fisheries (ACE - Aquafish) to share experiences and knowledge on how they can progress both as universities and centres as well as build a partnership.

The visiting team led by ACE - WM Director, Dr. Feleke Zewge, was welcomed by LUANAR Vice Chancellor, Professor George Kanyama Phiri.

In his remarks, the Vice Chancellor hailed the two centres for uplifting the banner of their universities, saying the centres play a very important role in lifting the image of universities.

On his part, Head of Chemistry at AAU, Dr. Ahmed Mustafa said they decided to partner with LUANAR since it also has a centre of excellence hence they can understand easily.

“We decided to partner with LUANAR because we all have Africa Centres of Excellence and we can understand each other easily. It was difficult to have partnerships with other universities without the centres since we had to explain everything and it’s not easy to convince others,” said Dr. Mustafa.

During the meeting, Deputy Centre Director of ACE - Aquafish, Dr. Daud Kassam said the centre aims at fostering innovation and entrepreneurship in the production of high skilled fit-for-purpose critical mass of agricultural scientists for improved aquaculture and fisheries management in order to enhance food, nutrition and economic security in Eastern and Southern Africa.

Dr. Kassam highlighted the programmes under the centre and also projects that they have been carrying out such as offering scholarships to postgraduate studentsand fish market research project in partnership with MALDECO.

ACE-Aquafish team and ACE-WM team discussed several issues on how best they can progress in different areas and also agreed to sign a memorandum of understanding that would see the two centres collaborating in future projects.
