LUANAR students at interacting with LSPCA staff member during the visit to LSPCA clinic
A group of about 30 LUANAR-Bunda Campus students, studying for their bachelor’s degree in Animal Science year 3, on Wednesday 14th March 2018 visited Lilongwe Society for the Protection and Care of Animals (LSPCA) clinic to learn about animal care, welfare and protection.
Besides attending a lecture on Animal Welfare and Behaviour by Dr. Tino, LUANAR students also visited the rehoming shelter for cats and dogs waiting for their forever home. They also visited an enrichment area where dogs go out to play, and had a look into the theatre and consultation rooms, among others.
Chief Technician at Bunda Campus Animal Science Department, Winchester Mvula, hailed LSPCA for its dedication towards promoting animal welfare in Malawi.
“LSPCA being the champion of animal welfare in Malawi, is a perfect place to learn from especially for our upcoming animal scientists,” said Mvula.
“What has been covered throughout today’s education visit at LSPCA is very similar to our academic curriculum,” said Mvula. “I believe these students have learnt a lotand will use the information learnt to advance their studies,” he added.
The students kept Dr. Tino fully engaged by asking many questions related to veterinary care and animal welfare. They were anxious to learn more about how animal welfare issues are being addressed in Malawi.
According to Mlengani Thawale, Class Representative and also President of Bunda Animal Science Organisation (BASO), the students were amazed to see animals being treated in a hospital environment, something they never imagined.
Across the country and the world at large, issues of animal welfare are usually neglected. Often times, animals are misunderstood and ill-treated due to the ignorance of people on animal freedoms. It is just fortunate that there are some people and organisations that are very passionate about caring for these animals.
