Mr Ching'amba showcasing one of the demonstration plots
Natural Resources College (NRC) of the Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR) on 27th March 2019 conducted a field day to demonstrate the preliminary results of the organic agriculture demonstration fields. The theme of the field day was: ‘Role of Organic Agriculture in improving Crop Productivity.

According to The Head of Agriculture Department, Mr. Mike Ching’amba, the field day was meant to showcase to members of staff and students on what happens when you embark in organic farming. He said according to the preliminary results so far, organic farming proved to be a good alternative to inorganic farming saying the organic fields did quite well.

He said organic farming is cost effective, saying the greater resistance of their crops to pests and diseases save farmers significantly from expensive insecticides, herbicides, fungicides and other chemicals.

“Organic farming has a lot of benefits. It uses a lot of organic matter to give crops the appropriate nutrients required to grow, and in the longer term helps conserve and improve soil health as well,” said Mr. Ching’amba.

In his remarks, NRC Campus Director, Dr Moses Chinyama, said he was impressed with the demonstration plots and urged staff and students to continue doing research in this area.

“This is very good initiative and I believe that research papers can come out of this. We need to document this and share the information with our farmers and stakeholders because if we don’t do that, our research will be irrelevant, “said Dr Chinyama.

He said the University is mandated to generate knowledge which can feed into generation of relevant national policies, saying knowledge generated through research is very important for the development of the nation.

In the modern world, organic farming is being promoted. Many agricultural products are produced in an organic way. Meat, dairy products and eggs come from animals that are fed organically and graze outdoors. They live in conditions that are natural to them. Cows, for example, are kept in pastures and fields. Vegetables and fruit are also produced with organic methods.
