Newly Constructed Postgraduate Hostel
Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR) has constructed a hostel for both its masters and PhD students.

LUANAR Deputy Vice Chancellor, Professor Emmanuel Kaunda said the hostel will address the problem of accommodation among these students saying previously available space could only accommodate 800 postgraduate students.

“This scenario has pressed LUANAR to embark on infrastructure development to increase bed space for students. This has been necessitated by the fact that LUANAR is situated some 35 km from the City Centre of Lilongwe and private accommodation for renting out is limited,” said Professor Kaunda.

He said the hostel will also support the growth of the Regional PhD programmes in Agriculture and Resource Economics and Aquaculture and Fisheries Science.

He further said currently 28 postgraduate students are able to access accommodation in this self –contained hostel.

“The hostel is able to accommodate married and mature students due to its spacious bed space as well self-catering services,’’ said Kaunda.

The project was mainly funded by The Regional Universities Forum for Capacity Building in Agriculture (RUFORUM), a consortium of 46 universities in Eastern, Central, Western and Southern Africa of which LUANAR is one of them.
