The government through the Ministry of Natural Resources Energy and Mining has commended Bunda Environmental Club, a club formed by Environmental Sciences and Natural Resource Management students, for its initiative in participating in this year’s World Environmental Day.

In her remarks Principal Secretary in the Ministry, Dr Yanira Mtupanyama commended the students for being actively involved in environmental issues.

She further stressed on the importance of conserving the environment.

The PS urged all key players in the sector to emulate from these students by actively taking part in conserving the environment saying this would save the country from the effects of climate change such as floods.

Dr Mtupanyama further urged people to improve waste management and hailed LUANAR through CABMACC for its initiative in making sure that the surroundings are well looked after by increasing the number of wastes collection bins around the campus.

“These bins will go a long way to helping in promoting proper waste disposal within the campus while promoting a cleaner and greener environment. Consequently, diseases that come due to improper poor sanitation will greatly be prevented and the health of all students will be boosted,” she said.

Bunda Environmental Club Chairperson Yamikani Idrissah said as a University with two major independent arms: agriculture and natural resources, LUANAR community needs to be aware of sustainable ways of consumption and productions hence adopt and sensitise stakeholders about them.

“Due to the race between consumption and production we are faced with a lot of environmental problems such as contamination of fresh water, air pollution, climate change as we are emitting wastes into the environment at a higher rate than that nature can assimilate it,” said Idrissah.

Among other things the event involved displays on environmental management, cleaning of the campus as well as launch of dust bins for the campus waste disposal.
