As we strive to live within our planetary boundaries, while population growth and economic development persevere unabated, World Environment day serves as an opportunity to channel our collective power to treat our planet and its resources.

In line with this the Capacity Building for Managing Climate Change in Malawi (CABMACC) programme and LUANAR Environmental Club students showcased different activities included sweeping on the roads and yards, the launch of dustbins, use of briquettes for cooking and solar cooker.

Speaking on the commemoration Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Natural Resources, Energy and Mining, Dr Yanila Ntupanyama, said that Malawi is losing 26 billion (US$57.8million) through environmental degradation especially deforestation. “In trying to reverse and arrest this problem, there is need to change our mind sent and support recycling, ru-suing, reducing and reversing for environmental sustainability”. This should be encouraging at all level especially at household level She further said that there is need to sensitize people to consume responsibly.

“In terms of reversing, we are encouraging natural degeneration of trees because regenerates grow faster than newly planted seedlings,” she said.

Dr Ntupanyama further implored Luanar to play a role in helping government to conserve natural resources.

Luanar Deputy Vice Chancellor Professor Emmanuel Kaunda said the institution is encouraging its students to be innovative in terms of conserving natural resources.
