The International and local organizing committee members would like to thank all those who responded to our call for participation in this Sixth PAFFA conference. We have received very encouraging responses from five of the six continents. We have received 230 abstracts to be presented by contributors from 37 different countries. These abstracts will be presented in either oral or poster form and 6 plenary lectures are expected to be delivered. The number of abstracts of the papers to be presented to under each theme is presented in a table. We have also prepared a preliminary program of the meeting. The time allocated for each plenary lecture is 40 minutes (30-35 minutes for presentation and 5-10 minutes for discussion) while 20 minutes is available for oral presentation (15 minutes for presentation and 5 minutes for discussion). Please note that if your oral presentation is in French, the written power point should be in English.

There are sessions allotted for poster presentation and authors need to be around their posters during these periods. Posters need to be in place at Sun n Sand Holiday Resort on the afternoon of Sunday, 23 September 2018. Poster sizes should not be more than 1.20 m (height) and 0.90 m (width). During the registration, a conference package kit containing booklet of abstracts and stationery will be made available upon presentation of registration fees payment proof. Please note that the process of sending responses on the status of the abstract review process was finalized. If you therefore have not received any response to your abstracts, kindly send an email to the secretariat (paffa2018@gmail.com ). We also urge all those who are yet to be sent registration fee invoices to write us on the same. .

TRAVEL AND RECEPTION

Airport Shuttle and Ground Transfers
Please note that we will provide transport from the airport to the conference venue, and back, starting from 22nd to 30th September. Participants who arrive earlier than 22nd September or leave after 30th September shall have to arrange for their transportation. Please kindly fill in the flight detail form available at the conference webpage to facilitate preparations towards the shuttles by 7th September. For any queries during the travel dates, kindly contact Edith Gondwe (+265 993 596 039) or Chimwemwe German (+265 999 642 431). There will also be transport facilities from places of accommodation to the conference at scheduled times throughoutthe conference period.
Visa
Delegates are responsible for their own Visa arrangements. Please check with your local travel agent to see if a Visa is required to enter Malawi. For any assistance kindly contact Bessie Milanzi at pro@bunda.luanar.mw with copy to paffa2018@gmail.com .
Registration Fee
We kindly request that you send proof of payment of registration fees to paffa2018@gmail.com with a copy to chirwamphatso@yahoo.com for those that have not done so. Those who haven’t paid registration fees should make sure to pay on Sunday afternoon at Sun n Sand Holiday Resort (recommended) and Monday morning.
Accommodation
The local organizing committee is assisting in hotel accommodation bookings. Kindly ensure that you have contacted the committee and indicated your preferred accommodation booking, by sending an email to paffa2018@gmail.com with a copy to gwazathokozire@gmail.com
About cash money
Credit cards are accepted only in some banks in Malawi. So, bringing cash in dollars is a recommendation to avoid financial problems during the meeting. We also recommend that you change money to local currency upon arrival at the airport.
Pre and post conference excursion
Pre and Post-conference excursions can be organized by contacting the local organizing committee or any local travel agency. Travel Grants
The JRS Foundation has provided a travel grant to support the participation of African scientists working on biodiversity conservation/Bioinformatics in the sector. A call for this travel grant is available at the conference webpage. click here to download the application form.

AquaTrans Regional Training

Date: 25th Sept 2018 to 27th Sept 2018

Description

The Regional training on Transformation of Aquaculture, Fish Processing and Value Addition in the SADC Region – AquaTrans 2 is a training that was developed to support the growth of aquaculture in the sector. The current training process focuses on building the capacity of participants in business skills. The three day training will allow participants to also be part of the PAFFA conference and appreciate the various efforts being made to advance the sector.

SADC Validation Report (Fish in Food and Nutrition Security in SADC region) Meeting

Date: 25th Sept 2018 to 26th Sept 2018

Description

SADC will be organising a two day workshop to validate the SADC report (Fish in Food and Nutrition Security in SADC region). The meeting will attract the particiation of members from 20 states, who will also participate in the rest of the PAFFA conference. The SADC side event will be open to the rest of the members to also allow full input into the regional intiiatives that are being implemented by SADC.

Youth Side Event

Date: 26th Sept 2018

Description

Malawi is hosting the Sixth International Conference of The Pan-African Fish And Fisheries Association from 24th to 28th September 2018, an event that has brought together delegates across the continent including young people. Considering the role of Youth in Aquaculture and fisheries, WorldFish in partnership with SADC and LUANAR have organized an exciting youth side event under the theme “Youth in Aquaculture and Fisheries: Unlocking potential of young people for sustainable Aquaculture and fisheries”.
Under this theme, the Youth Side Event will focus on discussions on how the youth can be actively engaged in innovative fish based agribusinesses, research, and lastly link young people with mentors with vast experiences in fisheries and aquaculture. Successful applicants will present their business ideas for further partnerships and mentorship program from interested delegates working within Aquaculture and Fisheries sector.

Be a youth from Africa aged from 18 to 35 who is actively engaged in innovative fish based agribusinesses.

Selection Criteria
The quality and relevance of the idea will be evaluated in terms of o The innovatiness of the business idea in contributing to addressing food and nutrition security problems in Africa o The contribution of the business idea towards sustainable management of aquaculture and fisheries resources.

Description

The JRS Foundtain has provided a USD15,000.00 grant to the PAFFA conference to support the participation of 7 African participants and 5 Malawian postgrduate students working on bioinfomatics in the sector. A side event will be organised where participants will be trained in aspects of bioninformatics.
